The Shivalik Ranges

AKARA's geological home

The Himalayas are vast—spanning 2,400 kilometers across five countries. Within that expanse, the Shivalik Range represents the southernmost sub-range, often called the “foothills.”

But foothills is a misnomer. The Shivaliks are geologically distinct, formed from sediment deposited millions of years ago when the Indian plate collided with the Eurasian plate. The resulting compression created folded rock layers rich in sandstone, siltstone, and conglomerate—formations that act as natural filtration systems.

AKARA’s source lies within the Shivalik formation in Himachal Pradesh, where ancient bedrock has been filtering water for epochs. The specific mineral composition of AKARA—moderate calcium, balanced magnesium, naturally alkaline pH—reflects the unique sedimentary and metamorphic geology of this region.

Not all Himalayan water is the same. Water sourced from higher-altitude glacial melt has different mineral content than water filtered through Shivalik bedrock. Water from Kashmir’s limestone formations differs from water in Uttarakhand’s granite ranges.

Terroir operates at this level of specificity.

The Shivalik aquifer that feeds AKARA sits deep enough to ensure decades of filtration. The water emerges naturally, driven by pressure rather than mechanical extraction. The spring is protected—isolated from surface contamination, agricultural runoff, and human development.

This protection is not guaranteed. Many Himalayan springs are threatened by deforestation, infrastructure projects, and over-extraction. AKARA’s source is situated within a protected zone where land use is limited and monitoring is continuous.

The relationship between source and brand is reciprocal. AKARA depends on the Shivalik aquifer remaining pristine. In turn, AKARA’s presence supports conservation efforts that ensure long-term viability.

Geography is not incidental to AKARA. It is the foundation. Without the Shivalik Ranges, without the specific bedrock formations, without the protected spring—AKARA does not exist.

This is what origin-led means. The place defines the product, not the reverse.
